A ROMANTIC AFTERNOON AT THE BALLET with THE LAKE MACQUARIE PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA

The Lake Macquarie Music Society is delighted to present a concert of wonderful ballet music this year with grateful thanks to Lake Macquarie City Council for a generous sponsorship. LMPO will be in full strength to perform these large Romantic scores. The opener will be The Romeo & Juliet Fantasy Overture by Tchaikovsky. This work is actually a tone poem, based on the Shakespeare play, with so many well loved moments quoted in film and television. The Prokofiev Montagues & Capulets comes from the same story set to ballet – so Romeo & Juliet feature in this program.
There will be excerpts from the beloved Swan Lake & The Nutcracker Suite No 2 by Tchaikovsky and dances from Coppelia & Giselle.
These works demand a large percussion section with three players. Watch for the triangle, drums. tambourine, glockenspiel, & the timpani, and you will hear the harp & the celeste (in the Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy). The brass will be in full strength. The contra bassoon, and the bass clarinet add to the orchestral colours.
Our string sections have some of the finest players in the region and the concert master is the impeccable Olena Zaphorezhets.
